| Dr. Ingemar von Ossowski is a senior scientist in the Veterinary Microbiology and Epidemiology division at the Department of Veterinary Biosciences (University of Helsinki). He majored in microbiology and obtained his BSc (First Class Honors) (1984), MSc (1986), and PhD (1993) degrees from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Manitoba (CANADA) and has more than 18 years of research experience from multiple positions as a postdoctoral and research scientist. His overall research activities and experience are in the areas of molecular biology and protein chemistry, with a special interest in protein engineering and structural-related projects. He has worked at the molecular and biochemical level with several enzymes and proteins and become experienced with the use of a variety of recombinant protein expression hosts and the computer software and programs employed in sequence comparison, database searching, homology analyses, and visualizing 3D protein structures. He has also worked in both academic and industrial research laboratories, as well as internationally having had conducted research for extended periods in four different countries. His most recent scientific pursuit entailed an investigation into understanding the molecular mechanisms governing the intestinal mucosa adhesion interactions between a probiotic Lactobacillus spp. and its human host, a study that was primarily focused on the characterization of mucus-specific surface-exposed proteins. One of his current duties is the part-time administrative coordinator for the Center of Excellence in Microbial Food Safety research at the University of Helsinki. | |
